Joplin, MO is looking at a major recovery effort after a tornado ripped a swath of damage through the city nearly a mile wide and four miles long. The damage caused by Sunday night's tornado, tearing through 2,000 structures and killing at least 116 people, will be compounded by oncoming storms. Schools, churches, homes, businesses, and a hospital were significantly damaged or destroyed by strong winds and direct tornado contact. Fortunately, water and electricity are available for the majority of the city. Communication and transportation infrastructure were damaged and the essential effort to restore phones and clear roads is ongoing. Relief workers are working to provide for those whose homes have been destroyed. Neither of the two Nazarene churches in the town of 50,000 was damaged. However, the homes and property of many in the surrounding communities - including some Nazarenes - suffered severe damage. The city of Joplin is coordinating its response through Missouri Southern State University. Joplin First Church of the Nazarene has been established as one of the disaster relief centers. Heart to Heart International is partnering with Nazarene Disaster Response to provide half a ton of Crisis Care Kits to help as an immediate response to the great need. Nazarenes will be working to rebuild their homes and communities even after the initial disaster response ends.
