Why Pray for Muslims? Jesus Died for Them.....

Ramadan 2011:  August 1 - 30

I receive this every year from 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World.  Each day of Ramadan a specific call for collective prayer comes to my inbox.  I wanted to share this with you.....

Why Pray For Muslims?

Muslims do not generally realize :
... that Jesus, the Messiah, is to be obeyed.
... that Jesus has the ability to forgive sins.
... that Jesus has conquered death through his resurrection.
... that Jesus has power over evil spirits.

... Muslims think of Jesus as a great prophet who preached an earlier form of Islam.
... Muslims generally believe that they can earn God’s approval through religious activities (prayers, fasting, giving money).
... Muslims do not think they can know God. They only think that they can know about Him.

“Worthy are You ... for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” (Rev. 5:9)

This is why we are praying.

Some Real Life Heroes!

These heroes need you!  The source of their strength is the Lord and He invites us to be a part!

Prayer Requests from our Nazarene Family.....

Our family is LARGE & around the world!  Here are some ways you can connect with them through the heart of God:

PRAY FOR:

GLOBAL MINISTRY REQUESTS

Metropolitan Cities and Remote Villages
World Mission Broadcast (WMB) is the Church of the Nazarene’s global radio, television, and Internet ministry. WMB is what takes the good news of Christ to metropolitan cities and to the remotest parts of the world. The following are specific ways you can pray for WMB ministry taking place in South America:

- Pray for equipment for WMB’s studio in Brazil. God has been faithful throughout the construction of the studio, but equipment is needed so that Portuguese material can be produced and students from Brazil Nazarene College can be trained in broadcast ministry.

- Pray that that secular radio stations in Paraguay will be open to broadcasting Christian programs.

- Pray that God will provide a national communications coordinator for Argentina and that many young people will become involved with new media technology to serve God.

- Pray for the broadcasting of Mujer Valiosa (The Valued Woman) on the Chilean network. Pray that the television program will minister to the hearts and lives of Chilean families and that stations will broadcast the second and third seasons.

- Pray for the production of the fourth season of Mujer Valiosa, that God will provide the needed human resources in all areas: technical, hosts, and special guests.

- Pray for the national WMB team in Peru. Pray that God will continue to strengthen the team and that WMB can take the Gospel message to provinces where the Church of the Nazarene does not yet have a presence.

- Pray for volunteer missionaries to work in radio and TV in South America including the countries of Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and Ecuador.

Tapan Kumar Roy - Christian Martyrs Stories - Christian Persecution

Tapan Kumar Roy - Christian Martyrs Stories - Christian Persecution

It's easy to not know what's going on in the world...even though we live in a technology driven day. I can see or find things about any area I plug into my computer; the media scampers to make sure I listen to their version of what's going on; computers, tv, radio, newspapers, cell phones, twitter, facebook, linked in....all wait to inform me. But am I informed?

I challenge you to read about Tapan & others. This is kingdom stuff! Sadly, stories of Christian Martyrs didn't seek me and if it makes headlines it's importance and degree of brutality doesn't communicate. I suppose it makes us uncomfortable and just doesn't sell or create ratings.

The link above is only one story, only one place where you can learn of your brothers & sisters' honor, faith, and love for Jesus. If you want to see how tradegies are used for kingdom purpose & Jesus' glory, you will have to make the decision to find out for yourself. Go ahead, look for it.....if you seek Me, you WILL find Me!

Haiti -- Still Hurting

Pain & destruction have a way of lingering on…….
Think about a time in your life when a tragedy happened.  Did people ‘move on’ before your life normalized?  Trauma never lies anything normal…new ‘ normals’ have to be made.  AND that requires help.  Without it, hope diminishes.  Please consider how you can help.  Below are measuring tools to understand just how far our money will go and just how many lives can be improved.  Let’s change some lives!!!

Although the  7.0 magnitude earthquake that devastated this island nation occurred over a year ago, the needs of the Haitian people are still great.  Experts predict it will take at least another ten years before life for Haitians resembles "rebuilt."

  • Rubble still lines the streets in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.
  • Schools meet under tents or under open skies.
  • Life in tent cities, with overcrowding and inadequate sanitation, has become a "new normal.”
  • Cholera has reached epidemic proportions in recent months.  (According to Haiti’s Ministry of Health (MSPP), since last November over 267,000 people have been infected with the disease,  and the death toll has now reached 4,747.)
  • In many areas food and water are in short supply.

The NMI Convention Project Offering will be received on August 2, 2011,  at the Virginia District Nazarene Camp in Buckingham.  Please place your offering in the large water bottle in the foyer now through the month of July.

Your gift of $10.00 will provide beans and rice to feed a family for a week.
Your gift of $60.00 will provide 100 gallons of clean bottled water.
Your gift of $100.00 will provide 8 people with a tent for shelter.
Your gift of $200.00 will provide fuel to transport items like food and water to those in need.

Nazarenes Respond!!

Nazarenes have responded to tornado ravaged areas and the warehouses need to be replenished with Crisis Care Kits!  Below are the needed items for each kit & we must have 6 kits in order to ship.   Because the need is current and ongoing, I am asking you to consider supplying a kit personally or team together with someone else to supply it.  Please follow the description EXACTLY because ANY variance will cause the entire box not to be shipped – including adding anything not on the list (no tracks, pictures, cards, or other thoughtful items).  Different countries have different restrictions and these are sent everywhere!   Bring your items in a 2 or 2.5 gallon Ziploc to church.  I need a team leader to oversee this with me.  Each bag will have to be inspected for accuracy and shipped by specific directions.   Serving the King & loving others with you and Nazarenes everywhere!  Hugs, Gay

INSTRUCTIONS:   Into a 2- OR 2.5-GALLON ZIPLOC BAG put the following items:

· 1 medium-size bottle of shampoo (12 to 18oz.), please tape flip-tops closed

· 2 bars of soap (no travel-size)

· 1 medium toothpaste (4.0 to 6.4 oz)

· 3 toothbrushes

· 1 box of Band-Aids (30 or more)

· 1 fingernail clipper

· 1 sturdy hair comb

· 2 hand towels

· 4 pocket-size packages of facial tissue

· 1 Beanie Baby-size stuffed toy

Joplin, Missouri Tornado Disaster - Sunday May 22

"In times of crisis we have a unique opportunity to connect with people not only in the temporal physical need, but also in the eternal spiritual need. I'm glad we are taking advantage of these opportunities to make a lasting connection."
- Rev. Althea Taylor, Coordinator NCM USA/Canada

Joplin, MO is looking at a major recovery effort after a tornado ripped a swath of damage through the city nearly a mile wide and four miles long. The damage caused by Sunday night's tornado, tearing through 2,000 structures and killing at least 116 people, will be compounded by oncoming storms. Schools, churches, homes, businesses, and a hospital were significantly damaged or destroyed by strong winds and direct tornado contact. Fortunately, water and electricity are available for the majority of the city. Communication and transportation infrastructure were damaged and the essential effort to restore phones and clear roads is ongoing. Relief workers are working to provide for those whose homes have been destroyed.

Neither of the two Nazarene churches in the town of 50,000 was damaged. However, the homes and property of many in the surrounding communities - including some Nazarenes - suffered severe damage. The city of Joplin is coordinating its response through Missouri Southern State University. Joplin First Church of the Nazarene has been established as one of the disaster relief centers. Heart to Heart International is partnering with Nazarene Disaster Response to provide half a ton of Crisis Care Kits to help as an immediate response to the great need. Nazarenes will be working to rebuild their homes and communities even after the initial disaster response ends.

We ask for your prayer and support as the church comes alongside the hurting in Joplin at this difficult time. To stay updated on the USA Disaster Response and how you can be involved please visit ncm.org/usacrisis.

Church asks for prayer in aftermath of Japan earthquake

Friday, March 11, 2011

Honshu, Japan

By NCN News Staff

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami off the northern coast of Japan killed hundreds and caused numerous injuries, fires,

and buildings to collapse on Friday afternoon local time.  The earthquake sent shockwaves across the Pacific region with an aftershock tsunami

hitting the Hawaiian Islands at 10:45 a.m. EST and along the western coastal region of the U.S. at 11:20 a.m. EST.

A 33-foot tsunami swept through Japan's coastal region north of Tokyo and destroyed much of the area's infrastructure, limiting communication.

Mark Sakamoto, president of Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary, tried most of the day Friday to reach the pastor or members of the church in

Sendai, where the tsunami struck.

Members of the Sendai Church of the Nazarene dedicated their new building only 12 months ago. The district made contact with pastor Shouei Abe

on Saturday morning local time. He is safe and the building is intact, Sakamoto said.

"Praise the Holy Name," Sakamoto said in a written comment on NCN News."Thank you for your prayer."

Sakamoto, pastor of the Koiwa church in Tokyo, said the quake frightened many people. In his family's apartment above the church, furniture toppled

over and items fell onto the floor.

The church building withstood the quake, and there are no reports of any injuries or fatalities in that area of Tokyo, Sakamoto said.

"I have assured Mark and Japan Nazarenes of the fervent prayer for the Japanese people," said Verne Ward, director of the Church of the Nazarene's

Asia-Pacific Region.

Ward paused the district assembly in Taiwan for an outpouring of prayer, and assured newly elected Japan District Superintendent Manabu Ishida of the

assembly's prayers for the hours and days ahead.

Junichi Nakade, an Asia-Pacific and Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary student, his wife, Mari, and their infant son, Tsukushi, were with Junichi's

parents in southern Japan when the quake and subsequent tsunami hit. The Nakades live on the campus of JNTS and said that the buildings remain intact,

though they are concerned about the state of their campus apartment.

The entire east coast of Japan remains under tsunami alerts and the country faces more dilemmas as aftershocks continue and the earthquake damaged

major utility plants, including two nuclear power plants.

Crews cooled down the plants' nuclear reactors after fires broke out in both facilities on Friday, however, 4.4 million homes remain without power.

As Marty Egashira visited his mother in the hospital, the earthquake struck. Egashira, a member of Japan NCM, joined hundreds of people stranded due

to damaged roads and a halt in public transportation. He will spend the night in the hospital and hopes to return home tomorrow, he said.

This is the strongest earthquake in Japan's recorded history. Government officials expect the number of deaths to increase amid widespread reports of

landslides, floods, collapsed buildings, and fires.

The 8.9 quake was the first in a series of quakes, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, which began at 2:45 p.m. local time about six miles below sea level

and 231 miles off the east coast. Five powerful aftershocks of up to 7.1 in magnitude followed within the hour and thirty occurred since the initial quake.

People in Tokyo, who were 235 miles away from epicenter, felt the shocks as did residents in Beijing, China, CNN reported.

The Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents, while scattered in global assignments and ministry, is issuing a call to prayer. As the

church journeys through the season of Lent, anticipating the memorial of the Lord's crucifixion and the glorious message of His resurrection, believers

know God is present in times of suffering. Prayers invoke the mercy, grace, and compassion of the Savior on behalf of all those affected by this disaster.

The Church asks Nazarenes everywhere to pause and pray on behalf of the Japanese people, and provide assistance if possible.

Persons and churches wishing to make a donation for Tsunami/Earthquake Relief 2011 can do so online

through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at ncm.org. Checks can be marked "ACM1762" and mailed to

Global Treasury Services, PO Box 843116 Kansas City, MO 64184. In Canada, checks should be made payable

and sent to the Church of the Nazarene Canada, 20 Regan Road, Unit 9, Brampton, Ontario L7A 1C3.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. receives four-star rating

Thursday, March 10, 2011

Lenexa, Kansas

By NCN News Staff

A U.S. charity evaluator awarded Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. a four-star rating for its management practices.

Charity Navigator, based in Glen Rock, New Jersey, rated NCMI after a review of the organization's fiscal and administrative records.

"As the nonprofit sector continues to grow at unprecedented pace, savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency,

and quantifiable results from the charities they choose to support with their hard-earned dollars," wrote Ken Berger, president and

chief executive officer of Charity Navigator, in a letter to NCMI.

NCMI, based on 2009 data, goes above and beyond the demand for accountability, Berger said.

"NCMI is very pleased to have received this recognition for the second consecutive year," said Tom Nees, chief executive officer of NCMI.

"It is a tribute to the integrity with which donations are used and efficient administration."

Charity Navigator, ranked one of the top nonprofit evaluators in the U.S. by Forbes, Business Week, and Kiplinger's Financial Magazine,

highlights the work of efficient charities and provides donors with information they need to make a charitable contribution.

"Only 19 percent of the charities we rate have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Nazarene Compassionate

Ministries, Inc. consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way and outperforms most other charities in America," Berger wrote.

"This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. from its peers and demonstrates

to the public it is worthy of their trust."

NCMI provides funds from donors outside the denomination to support Nazarene Compassionate Ministries' projects around the world. For the

past three years, approximately $4 million annually has been directed to Nazarene programs responding to human suffering in the U.S. and

around the world, Nees said.
As a U.S. nonprofit corporation, with a board elected by the Church of the Nazarene General Board, NCMI is one of several international resource

partners for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries and the Church of the Nazarene. For more information, visit the NCMI website, www.ncmi.org.

What Do You Think About?

A couple of things are on my mind this morning:  what do I think about AND Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is there will be your heart also.”

Can something be my treasure and me not think about it??  Hmm, that verse didn’t bother me so much before I made this connection.  I know we aren’t to compare ourselves to others but we do have mentors, right??  I wonder what our missionaries think about?  Sure, they are human just like me but I’m thinking their treasure is illustrated by their lives….not just their words, or their checkbooks for that matter.  Now, I’m really convicted!

The enemy would have us think we are different from them.  (After all, everyone is…our DNA says so!)  He is such a clever liar.  The very Spirit of God lives in us AND He is the same no matter whose heart He lives in!  Do not give Satan the victory of that lie in your life!  Do not become crippled by who you think you are, what you think you have, where you might have gone, or even did!  Who the Son of Man sets free is free indeed!!  Let’s live like the missionaries we are!!!!

Isaiah 43

18 “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
   and streams in the wasteland.”

Praying Daily for Missionaries
The following are daily suggestions of ways you can pray for missionaries as well as all workers around the world who minister for Jesus Christ:

Sunday: Spiritual life
– A closer walk with God. Missionaries need times of refreshing just as much as everyone else. Those in ministry give on a regular basis. Pray that they will take the time to be filled so that they will not be running on empty or on their own strength.

Monday: Mind – The ability to learn what is needed, be it language and culture or a new way of getting things done. Pray that their mind will be open and accepting to the new things that greet them. Louie Bustle, director of Nazarene Global Mission <http://www.nazareneglobalmission.org/> , used to say missionaries need to “trust the locals.” It is easier to think that we have all the answers than to admit we need to learn.

Tuesday: Team – The people the person works with – for good relationships that will build up the work and honor God. Pray for the local people whose lives are touched by the missionary, as well as missionary co-workers and leaders.

Wednesday: Well-being – No one likes being sick. Being sick in another cultural context can be scary and even dangerous. Malaria and other diseases for which the missionaries have not built up immunity can be deadly. Health care can be hard to find. Driving over rough roads, air travel and other modes of transportation can be fraught with … excitement.
Pray for physical safety from illness and for travel safety.

Thursday: Thoughts – Pray that the missionaries will not be discouraged. Pray that they will remain focused on the things of God. There are “get thee behind me” moments in everyone’s life. Pray that the missionaries will be able to discern those moments for what they are and be bold in confronting them.

Friday: Family – Spouse, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, mother and father. Some of these people will be Christian, others not. Some will be going through a crisis – physical, spiritual or emotional – which drains the missionary. Sometimes the stress comes from being in the situation; at other times the stress comes from being half the world away. Pray for peace, contentment and open communication between the missionary and family members.

Saturday: Schedule – As the week comes to a close and missionaries are planning the week ahead, pray that the schedule will be filled with divine appointments. Pray that when the schedule is disrupted the missionary will see the hand of God at work and not be angry, but rather expectant.

Dear Co-Laborer,

Do you know you are a co-laborer?  Financial support as well as prayer support unites you with brothers and sisters all over the world. You partner with them.  Here’s an important key:  money without prayer comes and goes, it has no lasting strength of its own & its ability to make a difference is controlled by the value placed on it by the world & the wisdom of man – you give, but aren’t connected. Money with prayer…now that’s the extension of Jesus’ hands and feet.  It is a powerhouse!  The hearts & lives of the giver as well as the receiver are changed!  Its impact becomes immeasurable!   Now, that’s the kind of impact that makes a difference.

The following are requests for prayer….will you labor with them?

Hugs!  Gay

Flooding
Heavy rains have led to severe flooding in several parts of the world including Australia, the Philippines, and Brazil. In Brazil the flooding and mudslides has led to over 600 deaths. Two Nazarene families were reported missing and the pastor’s family in Metropolis have lost their home. To read more about the flooding in Brazil, visit http://tinyurl.com/4rptwo3. Pray for all those who are suffering loss due to flooding.

JESUS Film Harvest Partners Requests
-       Pray for participants in the Los Angeles District’s JESUS Film Ministry Trip to Sri Lanka this month.
-       Join in prayer with the group from Mary’s Chapel in Alabama as they make final preparations to deliver equipment to a JESUS Film team in the Dominican Republic next week.
-       Please pray for each person attending the upcoming Spanish language World Challenge event in Los Angeles, California, on January 29. Pray that the Lord will bless this time of inspiration and commitment.

Now, where did those $$ go????

Below is a sample of what happens to our offerings…

Fiji Boat Project Update
An e-mail from Harmon Schmelzenbach

We have been able to take the money that Virginia gave and have a Coastal Boat custom built by a boat builder in Suva, Fiji. This boat is now being used for the ongoing expansion of the work along the southern most chain of islands of Fiji. The boat was completed and launched in December.  God was able to multiply the Virginia District's investment and by the launching, the boat was completely outfitted with the appropriate engine and all the necessary safety and survival equipment.  Other than our 'Open Ocean' vessels, this boat now leads the way as the largest and most safely equipped of any of the 'Coastal Boats' that Nazarene Maritime Ministries has provided over the last decade.  Melanesia / South Pacific Fields...   and especially the Nazarenes of our Southern Islands Circuit of our Fiji District, really thank the Nazarenes of Virginia for their great partnership in God's ministry to the lost and hurting people of the South Pacific!!

blessings,

Harmon

Thank you for giving to the Lord!!  Hugs!
